It’s the second year of Move in March, and I’m inviting you back! Last year we created a community of people who moved at least 15 minutes a day in March.
Remi and I are inviting you to join us to once again to Move in March, at least 15 minutes a day. Walk, dance, stretch, yoga, run, climb, lift, whatever gets you moving. I would absolutely love for you to tag me on Instagram and use the hashtag #MoveInMarch26 and encourage others to do the same so that we can support each other!
This year, I’m adding a little extra meaning to it by participating in the American Cancer Society 31 mile dog walking challenge.
I would appreciate your support in my own fundraising goal, which you can contribute directly to them using my Instagram fundraising link by clicking here, or by all means, start your own, especially if you have a dog! It will be great for both of you! (Check out the details on their site and donate to my fundraiser by clicking here.)
Why This Matters
Here’s why I care about this.
A quote from the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Facts and Figures 2025 report, “In the US, an estimated 40 out of 100 men and 39 out of 100 women will develop cancer during their lifetime.”
Those are not stellar odds.
However, this is not about fear, this is about agency.
That same report says, “Aside from avoiding tobacco use, maintaining a healthy body weight, being physically active, consuming a healthy diet, and avoiding or limiting alcohol intake are the most effective strategies for reducing cancer risk.”
And regarding physical activity, “In 2022, 48% of adults reported meeting recommended aerobic activity levels (150 minutes of moderate- or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity per week) and 27% reported no leisure-time physical activity in the past week. In 2021, only 24% of US high school students (males: 32%, females:
16%) engaged in the recommended minimum of 60 minutes of daily physical activity per week. Physical activity decreases the risk of cancers of the colon (but not rectum), female breast, endometrium, kidney, bladder, esophagus (adenocarcinoma), stomach (cardia), and possibly lung.” Link to the full report found by clicking here.
Science-Backed Things We Can Do To Improve Our Odds
- Avoid tobacco use – you are already doing this one right?
- Avoid or limit alcohol – did you do Dry January with me? Should we do another month this year? Dry July? Sober October?
- Consuming a healthy diet – did you join me for June303030 last year? Let’s do it again this year!
- Being physically active – hello Move in March! Who is with me!?
Static is the Default
We live in a time where distraction is easy, and discipline feels radical. (What does the word diet first bring up in your mind? A way of eating (what kind of diet does a tiger eat) or eating to restrict fat or sugar or calories to reduce weight?)
Screens ask nothing of our bodies. Movement does.
I’d rather be strong and mobile at 65 than wishing I had started earlier. It’s absolutley worth the effort today for my future benefit. These are generally pretty easy things for most people that help reduce your risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease, which are top causes of all mortality in the US and many other countries.
And did I mention that it is enjoyable? (Mostly 😜)
It may be a super busy time of life for you, and a struggle to incorporate these habits into your life at first. But once they are truly habits and your default, they are actually pretty easy to maintain as long as you are intentional.
Forward Momentum
If you choose to join me in walking one mile a day in March, you’re building a base for spring hikes, longer trails, and more time outside. We will once again be doing a nature scavenger hunt in April, and lots more fun things to keep our bodies and minds stimulated and rooted in nature.
Small, daily, intentional action – in our bodies, in our habits, and in what we give attention to adds up.
Join me for #MoveInMarch26!
Please join me for Move in March, it isn’t just logging minutes. It is choosing to be an active participant in your life. It genuinely makes me feel like I’m helping to do a little good in this world and for those who share my little corner of it. Use the hashtag #MoveInMarch26.
