Planting Tomatoes – with a glove stealing puppy

I planted my tomatoes EARLY this year. Weeks early. I’ve done this before and lost some plants to frost damage. This year I was better prepared.

First, historic data of when your last frost date falls is very important. Because the weather forecast app can change faster than you can refresh the page.

So this year instead of Mother’s Day or Derby Day, as is the local advice, or waiting past the last historic frost date, which is the last week of April for me, I planted on Earth Day! I kept my tomato plants warm and toasty with a little plastic “greenhouse” and a layer of frost cloth. The temperateure got down to 37 one night (not in the forecast to get that low), but I was prepared and my tomatoes got some extra time in the gorund to settle in before the longer and warmer days allowed them to really take off in growth.

Would you take this gamble? I have hindsight now and I think my plan worked out really well. I would definitely do it again!

Let me know how your tomatoes are doing in the comments below and look out for the next tomato update soon, they are turning into the main character in this year’s garden!
